Quad Dusters ATV Club

The "Quad Dusters" is a club that isn't a club .. there are no dues and no regular meetings. We're just a group of folks with ATV's that ride together. If you want to "join", just send some self-addressed-stamped-envelopes to: I will use those envelopes to send you news of upcomming events. Also include your phone number and e-mail address so we can tell you about short-notice rides & events.

Club President: Marilyn Usher (719)390-0538
Vice President: Linda White (719)686-1266

To eliminate some of the guess work, we have decided to ride on the first Saturday of every month. Unless otherwise posted, we meet at 9:00 to 9:30 and ride at 10:00. On that rare occasion when Mother Nature says "NO RIDING TODAY" we will use the 2nd Saturday of the month as an alternative. Here's the schedule we have so far. Please remember we reserve the right to change our minds if there's too much snow etc. You (members) will recieve a phone call if there are changes. Also, if you have a better area, and want to lead the ride, let Marilyn or Linda know well in advance and we can probably do it. Don't hesitate to call if there are any questions or if directions are needed.

We all bring a lunch, soft drinks, water, and snacks. Sometimes we bring hot dogs and cook over a fire. Wear layered clothing so you can take off and put on as required throughout the day. We recommend that you bring extra gloves, gas, tools, tow strap, tire patch kit, air compressor, rain gear, bungee cords, anything you might need.

If you have any news or ideas, please let us know. We'll put them in the newsletter.

2001 SCHEDULE

We don't need no stinkin schedule!
.. or maybe we do.

This year it was decided to only schedule the major events (campouts on long weekends) and the rest of the year would be AD-HOC rides. I have posted some scheduled BLM/FS trail clean up events on ATVtrailguide.com and I will try to keep it up-to-date.

I know I have a letter (piece of paper) around here somewhere with the details for the holiday weekends. I'll post it here when I find it.

Round Mountain - Take Hwy 24 West, past Lake George; turn right on Upper Tarryall Rd. (the first road after you pass the Round Mountain Campground). Proceed north 1 mile and turn right on forest access road. If there is snow just park off the road. If there is no snow, go about 200 yards ... just inside the fence.

Red Cone - Here is Redcone Peak (it is not a "pass") … To get there… From Denver, take hwy 285 west to Webster (well, the map shows Webster, but I don't think there really is a town or a sign … just keep going west a little further after you pass Grant). Turn right (North) onto County Road 60, which also becomes Forest road 120 after a bit. Note that even though it is designated as a Forest Road, and there are several places to park or camp along the road … there are signs posted that unlicensed vehicles are not permitted. Off-road vehicles are allowed just before you reach Handcart Campground (a fee area, and just *after* you pass the last free place to pull over. Last time we were there, we parked off the road at the entrance to the campground (but not *in* the campground)… and they charged us to park there! We still don't think that is right. Anyhow, there is on more parking area past the campground, but it is small and access is rough. I wouldn't recommend it for a camper of any sort. Note that Red Cone is 12,801' …. You will need to be jetted appropriately! Red Cone photos from 1998

Middle Quartz Creek/Pitkin Campground -

*** This area is shown on pages 58 & 59 on the Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer "Topo Maps of the Entire State" *** or on MapQuest on the internet (zoom in, zoom out, pan any direction, or select "road map" for directions)

To get there, you continue West on highway 50 past Sargent; turn right (North) onto county road 76 at Parlin. You go through Ohio and Pitkin. After Pitkin, it becomes Forest Road 765. About 1 mile past Pitkin (I didn't measure it) is Pitkin Campground, a Forest Service "Fee" campground ($12). Pitkin Campground has a lot of pull-through spaces and room for larger campers, clean toilets with lights, trash dumpsters, and grey-water dump station. Additional camp sites are along Middle Quartz Creek. Just go about 1/2 mile past Pitkin Campground, cross a cattle-guard, and turn right at the "Middle Quartz Creek" sign. The road follows Middle Quartz Creek up a valley where there are nice, open areas for free primitive camping, and there is another Forset Service "fee" campground at the top of the valley. This area is right at the base of Williams Pass, Hancock Pass, Alpine Tunnel, etc. Also, here's the kicker - Pitkin is "ATV Friendly", you can ride right into town, go to the store, get gas etc.!
Come jetted for 10-13 thousand feet.

Shelf Road - Take Hwy 115 south to Hwy 50 west to first stoplight in Cañon City. Turn right on Dozier (by Wal-Mart). Dozier will turn into Central and go west. Turn right on Fields. When the pavement ends cross one cattle guard and veer left at the "Y" (toward the banks). Camping & meeting place is at the corral.

Painted Rocks - Take Hwy 67 north from Woodland Park past Colorado Campground. After the bridge, turn left on Painted Rocks Road. Cross a small cattle-guard after the private property and turn left at the first little two-track trail you come to. Go over the hill and down to a large clearing to park.

Dinosaur Digs - From Cañon City turn north on Dozier (first stop light, by Wal-Mart). Dozier changes name to Central and turns west. Turn right on Fields. Meeting area is at the Cleveland Quarry parking area.

Note: The clean-up was actually in an area that is open for target practice, then we visited the Dinosaur Digs which were nearby. The Digs are not marked or fenced .. the security lies in the fact that you don't know were they are unless someone shows you. It is illegal to take any of the fossils out - but it was very interesting to see where they came from and learn a little about the dinosaurs and the digs.

Texas Creek is west of Cotopaxi and the Royal Gorge turn off on Hwy 50. At Texas Creek turn right and cross the river (there's only one road there that crosses the river; you can't go wrong). This road runs parallel to the railroad for a bit, then crosses the RR (north). Take the second left after crossing the RR to get to the parking area.

Squirrel CreekFrom Colorado Springs, take hwy 115 south to Florence. Turn south on hwy 67. Follow 67 until it hits hwy 96 at Wetmore. Take 96 west to McKenzie Junction and turn south on hwy 165. Just south of Bishop's Castle there will be a turn-off to the east (left, going this way) onto Forest Road 382 (also, sign says Davenport Campground). Just before you get to the campground, which is at the end of the road, there is a turn-off to the left and a big field where we can park..
MapQuest .. Zoom out for the big picture.

Tanner Trail

Take Hwy 50 west thru Cañon City, south on 9th street to the graveyard, right on Elm to Oak Creek Grade Rd. (3 blocks) south 4 miles to Tanner Trail Head. (there are signs for the trail head). The parking area is small maybe 6 or 7 vehicles side by side but deep enough for trailers. If needed there are some areas between the road and fence on the west side of the road a short distance before and after the trail head, and another bigger area further south at the inside of a "Y" intersection. U-turns can be made at the "Y". This is a real good trail. Dave Kemper and Slim have been working on it last summer. For you're records Stultz Trail is further up Oak Creek Grade 4 more miles. You can make a loop out of Tanner and Stultz.
